Montsacopa is a volcano located in the interior of the city of Olot, in the district of Sant Francesc, lined between the volcanoes of La Garrinada and Montolivet on one of the volcanoes. same fracture. Next to the crater there is the hermitage of Sant Francesc de Pàdua, built during the 17th century, which also means that it is known as the volcano of Sant Francesc.

It has an area of 23.69 hectares and is a natural reserve according to Law 2/1982.

It is the last volcano that was formed in Olot. It exploded about 100,000 years ago and its rounded crater is the product of a stombolic eruption that is not explosive first and of a more explosive (flame retardant). It emitted a modest stream of lava towards the northwest (the Morrot), that is cut by the river of Riudaura. Its projections (pyroclasts and ashes) cover much of the Olot plain. This crater is unique in the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa that has not been deformed by any wash lava at the end of the eruption.

Of the grederes on the south and southwest slopes, a large part of the material was obtained, with which several of the city's constructions were made, until they were closed in the sixties. Recently they have been restored as museum spaces.

During the French occupation of 1812 the hermitage was walled, and the two defensive towers still retained were built. The path of the Viacrucis runs from the cemetery of Olot and around the crater there is a circular walk with birches and benches that is a magnificent viewpoint of Olot and its surroundings.

Montsacopa had been completely deforested and cultivated. At the moment the bottom of its circular crater is occupied by fields of crop and the southern flank has orchards, whereas to the others, the vegetation recovers spontaneously or it stays with grass.
